Dear East Franklin Families: We hope you enjoyed your summer break and that you had a chance to spend some quality family time together. The beginning of the 2010-2011 school year is here and we are looking forward to another exciting year of learning! It is our goal to provide your child with a quality education and assist them in reaching academic success. We know the beginning of the school year is a busy time for everyone, but we ask that you please take the time to read our school newsletter and student handbook, and look through, fill out and return to school all required forms that are in this home/school daily communication folder. We cannot stress enough how important it is that the office has a current, working phone number for each student in case of an emergency! Finally, we encourage you to take an active
role in the school community by joining PTA, volunteering or just visiting the school. It takes all of us working together to create a successful learning environment! We look forward to seeing all of you and want to thank you in advance for your cooperation in making this school year a successful one. If you need further information or clarification, or have any questions, please feel free to stop by or call the school office at 801-8100. AttendanceState law requires that we verify all absences. You can assist us by calling our attendance line by 9:00 AM at (614) 801-8101. Leave a message with the child's name, teacher's name, and the reason for the absence. Parents are responsible for providing a phone number to the school office where they can be reached during the day. The school will attempt to call that number. If there is no answer at that number, the parent will receive a n automated call notifying them of their child's absence. Upon the child's return to school, all students with unverified absences must present a signed parent note or other proper documentation to the office. This note will be placed in the child's cumulative record. Please refer to the family handbook for the district's attendance policy. Internet student user agreement A parent permission form is no longer required for your child to be allowed access to the Internet and the World Wide Web. Parents can opt out of allowing their child
access; however, the parent must inform the principal “in writing” of that request within the first two weeks of school.Medication Medication prescribed by your doctor or over- the-counter medications cannot be given to children at school without a doctor's written permission and directions. This is to protect the child in case of a reaction to medication. It is also an authorization for the school to give the correct amount and even to administer it to the child. If your child will be taking medication at school, please stop in the school office and pick up a Medication Permission form. Please read your family handbook for additional information on the medication policy. School Fees In an effort to cover the cost of basic consumable student supplies, the South-Western City School District collects an annual $20.00 instructional fee for each of its students. As a district, we are able to purchase certain supplies and materials at significantly reduced bulk-rate
prices, which we pass along to you and your student. This fee stays at your child’s school and reduces the need for you to purchase many of the traditional school supplies your child may need throughout the school year. However, there may be organizational materials you might wish to purchase for your child such as folders, notebooks/keepers and preferred types of writing utensils, in addition to basic school supplies. Many parents ask about donating items to the classroom. Items such as extra pencils, pens, boxes of tissues, col-ored pencils, highlighters, and markers are always welcome. Teachers can provide you with assistance as to what items might be appreciated in your child’s classroom. Emergency Dismissal Plan Please take a moment to complete the section in your child’s agenda book (handbook if kindergarten student). Make sure you and your family members discuss and understand your plan. We are unable to contact parents if we have a school emergency, such as a power
outage. Students will not be able to call home due to a school emergency. Family Handbook Each student is provided a Family Hand-book (in agenda book for grades 1 and 4). Please read it carefully and make sure your child understands their responsibility in following the rules. Keep it in a handy location to refer to throughout the year.
Continuous Improvement Plan Implementation Students, staff, and the East Franklin community will be part of our C.I.P. We have three focus areas: 1. Professional Development, 2. Family Involvement, and 3. Student Achievement. Literacy Collaborative East Franklin is in its twelfth year of implementing Literacy Collaborative techniques from OSU. Students and staff will continue yearlong literacy development in reading and writing. Literacy volunteers are an important part of this program. Your Right to View Teacher QualificationsUnder the No Child Left Behind Education Reform Act, parents have the right to request information regarding the qualifications of their student’s classroom teacher(s), including: • If the teacher has met state qualification and licensing criteria for the grade level and subject taught; • If the teacher is teaching under emergency or provisional status; • The teacher’s baccalaureate degree major, graduate certification, and field of discipline; • Whether the
student is provided services by a paraprofessional (aide) and if so, their qualifications. New visitor ID system For the safety and security of all students and staff, we will be using a computerized visitor sign-in system this fall. The system will allow us to track visitors more effectively, while providing added safety features to protect our students. The new system prints visitor and volunteer badges, substitute teacher badges, tardy slips and return to class passes. It also helps us track students leaving early and arriving late, and volunteer time. More information is available on the district web site at www.swcs.us in the Parent Resource area. Parent Assistant Module (PAM) Beginning in September, parents will be able to view their child’s educational information online. The Parent Assistant Module (PAM) will allow parents to view: Report cards for students in grades 5-12 Student class schedules Credits
earned toward graduation Detailed attendance information Emergency contact information School calendars, showing non-school days Student discipline information Assignments, test scores and grades for students in grades 5-12 in classrooms where the teacher uses the eSIS grade book program A unique user ID and password will be provided to you as well as step-by-step instructions and easy-to-use documen-tation on how to use the system. Look for more information when school starts. School Bell Awards Have you had a positive experience with a South-Western City Schools staff member? Do you feel they went above and beyond normal job duties to help your child or grandchild? If so, you can nominate that person for a School Bell Award. Nomination forms are available on the district web site at www.swcs.us in the Parent Resource area. Forms may be sent to the school principal, the employee’s immediate supervisor, the district
